Solid, outline and sparkle stars
★ (U+2605, Black Star) and ☆ (U+2606, White Star) are the plain filled and empty pair. In Unicode, black means filled and white means outlined. Most of the other stars come from the Dingbats block, added in Unicode 1.1 in 1993: ✩ is a stress outlined white star, ✪ a circled white star, ✯ a pinwheel star and ✰ a shadowed white star. ✦ (Black Four Pointed Star) and ✧ (White Four Pointed Star) are the four-pointed sparkles.
⭑ and ⭒ are the small black and white stars. They were added later, in Unicode 5.1 in 2008, so they are a little more likely than the others to be missing on an old device.
Using stars as a rating
Use ★ for a filled star and ☆ for an empty one. The Star rating rows group above has all six rows from five out of five down to none, ready to paste. They are plain text, so they work anywhere text works, but they are only text and not a clickable rating control.
Why some stars have asterisk in their name
4 of the stars here, such as ✺ and ✻, carry asterisk in their official Unicode names, because they belong to the same family of decorative ornaments. ⋆ is U+22C6, Star Operator, a mathematical symbol, and ⍟ is U+235F from the APL block. They copy and paste like any other symbol. The names only matter if you look a character up in a Unicode reference, and the table below lists every official name.
Emoji stars
⭐ is U+2B50, White Medium Star, added in Unicode 5.1 in 2008. 🌟, ✨, 💫 and 🌠 came with Unicode 6.0 in 2010. Unicode marks all five as emoji by default, so apps draw them in color and each platform uses its own style. If you need a star that matches the color of your text, use one of the 25 text stars instead.
Every symbol with its Unicode details
The table lists the 30 star symbols from the first three groups. The rating rows and combos are made of ordinary characters, so they have no single Unicode entry.

Source: the Unicode Character Database (character names, DerivedAge.txt and emoji-data.txt), checked in November 2026. The default look column follows Unicode's emoji properties. Apps and fonts can still draw a symbol differently, so treat it as a guide and not a promise. UTF-16 units is how many 16-bit units the symbol takes, which some apps use when they count length. Added in Unicode, by symbol count: 22 in Unicode 1.1 (1993), 4 in Unicode 5.1 (2008) and 4 in Unicode 6.0 (2010).
Where star symbols work
Symbols paste as ordinary text, so they work in bios, captions, comments, display names and chat messages. Handle or username fields are often stricter and may accept only letters, numbers and a few punctuation marks, so a symbol can be rejected or removed there even when it works in the display name on the same platform. Paste it into the field and check the preview before you save.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I copy and paste a star symbol?
Click or tap any card on this page and the symbol is copied to your clipboard as a Unicode character. Paste it with Ctrl+V on a computer, or long-press and choose Paste on a phone. No app, download or special keyboard is needed.
What is the difference between ★, ☆ and ⭐?
★ is U+2605, Black Star, and ☆ is U+2606, White Star. Both are text characters from Unicode 1.1 (1993), so they follow the color of the text around them. ⭐ is U+2B50, White Medium Star, added in Unicode 5.1 (2008), and Unicode marks it as an emoji that apps normally draw in color.
How do I make a star rating with symbols?
Use ★ for each filled star and ☆ for each empty one, so a four out of five rating is ★★★★☆. The Star rating rows group on this page has all six ready to paste. They are plain text and not a rating control that people can click.
What are ✦ and ✧?
✦ is U+2726, Black Four Pointed Star, and ✧ is U+2727, White Four Pointed Star. Both are in the Dingbats block and were added in Unicode 1.1 in 1993. They are often used as small sparkles around a name or a bio line.
Why does ⋆ look different from ★?
⋆ is U+22C6, Star Operator, a mathematical symbol, while ★ is a dingbat star. Because ⋆ is a math operator, its size and position depend on the font, so it can look smaller or sit differently than ★.
Why does a star show as a box?
The character copied correctly, but the font on that device has no drawing for it. The newest stars on this page are the Unicode 6.0 emoji from 2010, so box shapes are rare. If you see one, try the same star in another app.
What is the Unicode for a star symbol?
★ is U+2605, Black Star, and ☆ is U+2606, White Star, both added in Unicode 1.1 in 1993. ⭐ is U+2B50, White Medium Star, added in Unicode 5.1 in 2008. The table on this page lists the code point of every star.
What is a star text symbol?
A star text symbol is a star that is a text character, such as ★, ☆ or ✦, and not an emoji picture. It follows the color of the surrounding text. This page has 25 text stars and 5 emoji stars.
Can I use star symbols in a username?
It depends on the platform. Display names and bios usually accept more characters than the unique handle, which often allows only letters, numbers and a few punctuation marks. Check the rules of the platform you are using, then paste the symbol into the field and look at the preview before you save.
