Steam Name Styles Compared

Key takeaway: This page writes your text in 14 Unicode styles. 9 keep the text the same length, and the others add between 2 and 27 characters. Steam sets its own rules for profile names and we have not tested which styles it accepts. Glitch adds random marks, so its length changes each time.

How to Try a Style on Steam

Type your text in the box above, click Copy on a style, then open your Steam profile, choose Edit Profile and paste it into the profile name or summary field. Menu names can change, and Steam decides what it accepts, so read the message it shows. We have not tested which styles Steam takes in a name.

Styles for a Gamer Profile

Styles that keep the length of the text include Bold, Bold Fraktur, Medieval, Squared, Double Struck and Monospace. Glitch puts 1 to 3 random marks on each letter, so its length changes every time you copy it. Neon and Fire add an emoji on each side. Bold Fraktur and Medieval give the same output here.

For other places gamers use styled text, see Discord fonts, gaming fonts and Twitch fonts.

Length Limits and Counting

Steam sets its own limits on how long a name can be, and they can change, so check the game or site. Styles that add characters use more of that limit, and the table shows how many. 11 of the 14 styles use characters that count as 2 UTF-16 units, and some apps count length that way. We have not tested how Steam counts them.

All 14 Styles With Character Counts

"Extra" is how many characters a style adds to the plain text. The UTF-16 column counts the same text the way some apps do, so a bigger number uses up more of a length limit.

Tips

Short names firstStyles that add marks or symbols use more of any length limit
Glitch changes each timeCopy it again to get a different set of marks
Test on a second deviceIf a device has no drawing for a character, it shows an empty box
Plain styles scan easierIn a friends list, styles with no extra marks are easier to read

Common Questions

Can I use fancy text in my Steam name? +
We have not tested it. Fancy text is made of ordinary Unicode characters, but what Steam allows in a profile name is Steam's decision and the rules can change. Paste a short test and read the message Steam shows.
How do I change my Steam profile name? +
Open your Steam profile, choose Edit Profile and change the profile name field. Menu names can change, so look for the option to edit your profile.
Can I use these styles in a Steam summary? +
They paste as ordinary text, so they can go in any field that accepts text. Steam decides which characters it keeps, so paste the text in and check the preview before you save.
Which styles keep my text the same length? +
9 of the 14 styles keep a 9 character test text at 9 characters: Bold, Bold Fraktur, Medieval, Squared, Double Struck, Monospace, Bubble Text, Fraktur and Bold Italic.
Which style adds the most extra characters? +
Glitch adds the most. It puts 1 to 3 random marks on each letter, so a 9 letter name becomes 18 to 36 characters. Among the other styles, Y2K adds the most, 5 for this sample.
Why does a style show as a box? +
A box means the device's font has no drawing for that character. The oldest characters on this page are from Unicode 1.1 (1993) and the newest needed for this sample is Unicode 6.0 (2010), in Squared and Fire πŸ”₯. Test your text on a second device if it matters.
Do styled letters affect search or accessibility? +
Styled letters are different characters from plain letters, so search and screen readers may treat them differently. Keep the words people would look for in plain letters and use styles for decoration. See the Unicode accessibility guide for more.
Are some styles identical? +
Yes. On this page Bold Fraktur and Medieval give the same output for this sample, so you can pick either one.
