Definition: A cross symbol is a Unicode character drawn as a cross, a dagger or an X, such as ✝ (U+271D, Latin Cross) and † (U+2020, Dagger). They are ordinary text characters, so they copy and paste anywhere text is accepted and follow the color of the surrounding text.

Key takeaway: 22 of the 26 symbols on this page were added in Unicode 1.1 in 1993. The newest is ⸸ Turned Dagger (U+2E38), added in Unicode 6.1 (2012). Only ❌ is an emoji by default, and ✝, ☦ and ✖ can switch to an emoji form.

Crosses, daggers and X marks do different jobs

† (U+2020, Dagger) and ‡ (U+2021, Double Dagger) are reference marks used for footnotes after the asterisk. Outside print they are also used as decoration in alt and goth styles. ✝, ✞ and ✟ are the Latin Cross, the Shadowed White Latin Cross and the Outlined Latin Cross. ✠ is the Maltese Cross, ☦ the Orthodox Cross, ☨ the Cross of Lorraine and ☩ the Cross of Jerusalem.

The X marks are separate. ✕ and ✖ are multiplication X characters, ✗ and ✘ are ballot X characters, and ❌ is the Cross Mark emoji. Ballot X characters suit a no or a wrong answer, and the multiplication X characters suit math.

A note on meaning

Several of these characters are religious symbols, including ✝, ☦ and ☥ (the ankh). Unicode includes them as characters, and many people also use them as decoration. Because they carry meaning for some people, think about where you post them.

Using crosses in an aesthetic bio

Alt and goth bios often pair a cross or dagger with moons and other dark symbols. The main symbols page has an Aesthetic and Goth group, and the gothic text generator turns your name into matching blackletter style letters.

Source: the Unicode Character Database (character names, DerivedAge.txt and emoji-data.txt), checked in November 2026. The default look column follows Unicode's emoji properties. Apps and fonts can still draw a symbol differently, so treat it as a guide and not a promise. UTF-16 units is how many 16-bit units the symbol takes, which some apps use when they count length. Added in Unicode, by symbol count: 22 in Unicode 1.1 (1993), 2 in Unicode 3.0 (1999), 1 in Unicode 6.0 (2010) and 1 in Unicode 6.1 (2012). Official names for ✢ ✣ ✤ ✥ say asterisk, because Unicode files them with the ornamental asterisks, but they are drawn as four-armed crosses.

Where cross symbols work

Symbols paste as ordinary text, so they work in bios, captions, comments, display names and chat messages. Handle or username fields are often stricter and may accept only letters, numbers and a few punctuation marks, so a symbol can be rejected or removed there even when it works in the display name on the same platform. Paste it into the field and check the preview before you save.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I copy and paste a cross symbol?

Click or tap any card on this page and the symbol is copied to your clipboard as a Unicode character. Paste it with Ctrl+V on a computer, or long-press and choose Paste on a phone. No app, download or special keyboard is needed.

What are † and ‡ used for?

† is U+2020, Dagger, and ‡ is U+2021, Double Dagger. In writing they are reference marks that point to a footnote, used after the asterisk. In online bios they are also used as decoration.

What is the difference between ✝, ✞ and ✟?

✝ is U+271D, Latin Cross, ✞ is U+271E, Shadowed White Latin Cross, and ✟ is U+271F, Outlined Latin Cross. All three are in the Dingbats block and were added in Unicode 1.1 in 1993. Only ✝ also has an emoji form.

What is the difference between ✖, ✗ and ❌?

✖ is U+2716, Heavy Multiplication X, a text character with an emoji form. ✗ is U+2717, Ballot X, a plain text character. ❌ is U+274C, Cross Mark, which Unicode marks as an emoji drawn in color by default.

Can I use religious cross symbols as decoration?

Unicode includes them as ordinary characters, and many people use them decoratively. They also carry religious meaning for some people, so consider the context and the audience before you use them.

Why does a cross show as a box?

The character copied correctly, but the font on that device has no drawing for it. The newest symbol here is ⸸ Turned Dagger from Unicode 6.1 (2012), so older fonts may not have it. The rest are from 2010 or earlier.

How do I copy and paste a cross emoji?

The cross emoji are ✝ (U+271D, Latin Cross, which has an emoji form) and ❌ (U+274C, Cross Mark, an emoji by default). Click either one on this page to copy it. ✝ can show as a plain text cross or as an emoji depending on the app, while ❌ is drawn in color.

What is a cross text symbol?

A cross text symbol is a cross that is a text character, such as †, ✝, ✞, ✟, ✠ or ♰, and not an emoji picture. It follows the color of the surrounding text. 22 of the 26 symbols on this page are plain text only.

Can I use cross symbols in a username?

It depends on the platform. Display names and bios usually accept more characters than the unique handle, which often allows only letters, numbers and a few punctuation marks. Check the rules of the platform you are using, then paste the symbol into the field and look at the preview before you save.
