Key takeaway: Of the 29 hearts on this page, 21 are drawn as colored emoji by default, 3 are text characters that also have an emoji form, and 5 are text only. If you want a heart that matches your text color everywhere, pick ♡ or one of the other text-only hearts, which have no emoji form in Unicode.

Text hearts and emoji hearts behave differently

The hearts on this page come in two kinds. Text hearts such as ♡ and ♥ are shapes from a font, so they take the color and size of the text around them. Emoji hearts such as 💕 are drawn in color by each platform in its own style, which is why the same emoji looks different on an iPhone, an Android phone and a Windows PC.

Some hearts sit in between. ❤ is U+2764, officially named Heavy Black Heart, and Unicode lists it as a text character that also has an emoji form. Adding the invisible variation selector U+FE0F after it asks for the emoji form, which apps draw as a colored heart. Adding U+FE0E asks for the text form. Apps may ignore either request, so the same ❤ can look black in one app and red in another. ♥ (U+2665) and ❣ (U+2763) follow the same rule. ♡ (U+2661) does not, because Unicode gives it no emoji form.

Colored hearts and when each was added

The red heart is ❤ (Unicode 1.1, 1993). Every other color came later: blue, green, purple and yellow (Unicode 6.0, 2010); black (Unicode 9.0, 2016); orange (Unicode 10.0, 2017); brown and white (Unicode 12.0, 2019); grey, light blue and pink (Unicode 15.0, 2022). Older devices may not have the newest ones and can show a box instead, so a plain ♡ is the safer choice when you do not know what device a reader has.

Putting hearts around a name or a bio line

A heart before and after a name is the simplest frame, for example ♡ Mia ♡. The Heart combos group above has ready-made frames built only from ordinary characters, so you can paste a whole frame in one click. To style the letters inside the frame as well, run the name through the cute fonts generator or the font generator.

Every symbol with its Unicode details

The table lists the 29 heart symbols from the first three groups. The combos are made of ordinary characters, so they have no single Unicode entry.

Source: the Unicode Character Database (character names, DerivedAge.txt and emoji-data.txt), checked in November 2026. The default look column follows Unicode's emoji properties. Apps and fonts can still draw a symbol differently, so treat it as a guide and not a promise. UTF-16 units is how many 16-bit units the symbol takes, which some apps use when they count length. Added in Unicode, by symbol count: 8 in Unicode 1.1 (1993), 14 in Unicode 6.0 (2010), 1 in Unicode 9.0 (2016), 1 in Unicode 10.0 (2017), 2 in Unicode 12.0 (2019) and 3 in Unicode 15.0 (2022).

How many characters a heart uses

A text heart such as ♡ is one character and one UTF-16 unit. 21 of the 29 hearts here sit above U+FFFF, including 💕 and 💜, and take two UTF-16 units each. Some apps count length in UTF-16 units, so these use up more of a limit than they appear to. The UTF-16 column in the table shows the count for every heart.

Where heart symbols work

Symbols paste as ordinary text, so they work in bios, captions, comments, display names and chat messages. Handle or username fields are often stricter and may accept only letters, numbers and a few punctuation marks, so a symbol can be rejected or removed there even when it works in the display name on the same platform. Paste it into the field and check the preview before you save.

If a heart shows as a box, see the note on missing glyphs in the FAQ below. See the full set on the copy and paste symbols page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I copy and paste a heart symbol?

Click or tap any card on this page and the symbol is copied to your clipboard as a Unicode character. Paste it with Ctrl+V on a computer, or long-press and choose Paste on a phone. No app, download or special keyboard is needed.

What is the difference between ♡ and ♥?

♡ is U+2661, White Heart Suit, and ♥ is U+2665, Black Heart Suit. Both were added in Unicode 1.1 in 1993 as playing card suit characters. ♡ is an outline and ♥ is solid. Both take the color of the surrounding text, although some apps draw ♥ in its emoji form because Unicode gives it one.

Why does ❤ look black in one app and red in another?

❤ is U+2764, officially named Heavy Black Heart. Unicode lists it as a text character that also has an emoji form, chosen by adding the variation selector U+FE0F. An app that applies the emoji form draws a colored heart. An app that draws it as text uses the color of the surrounding text. Adding U+FE0E asks for the text form, but apps are allowed to ignore the request.

Are heart symbols the same as heart emoji?

Not exactly. Text hearts such as ♡ are ordinary characters from a font, so they follow the text color and size. Emoji hearts such as 💕 are drawn by each platform in its own colored style, so the same emoji looks different on different devices.

Why does a heart show as a box?

The character copied correctly, but the font on that device has no drawing for it. This is most likely with the newest emoji hearts: 🩷, 🩵 and 🩶 were added in Unicode 15.0 in 2022, so older devices may not have them. Hearts such as ♡ and ♥ have been in Unicode since 1993.

How many characters is a heart symbol?

A text heart such as ♡ is one character and one UTF-16 unit. An emoji heart such as 💕 is one character but two UTF-16 units, and some apps count the larger number when they check a length limit.

What is a text heart?

A text heart is a heart made from a Unicode character, such as ♡, ♥ or ❤, instead of a picture. It pastes as ordinary text and follows the color and size of the surrounding text. The Text hearts group on this page has 8 of them, and the Heart combos group has ready-made hearts with sparkles and wings.

What are cute heart symbols?

Cute heart symbols are soft decorative hearts such as ♡, ❥ and ❣, and hearts framed with sparkles or wings, like ˚ʚ♡ɞ˚ and ୨♡୧. The Heart combos group on this page has ready-made ones to paste.

Are there heart kaomoji?

Yes. Heart kaomoji are text faces with a heart in them, such as (♡°▽°♡) and (。♥‿♥。). The Heart kaomoji group on this page has four, and the kaomoji page has more in its Love group.

Can I use heart symbols in a username?

It depends on the platform. Display names and bios usually accept more characters than the unique handle, which often allows only letters, numbers and a few punctuation marks. Check the rules of the platform you are using, then paste the symbol into the field and look at the preview before you save.
