What the data shows

The most useful single finding: the bold, italic, script and Fraktur styles that most people use come from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, added in Unicode 3.1 in 2001. For the reasons behind empty boxes, read why fancy text shows up as boxes.

How this was measured

Every number comes from running the real generator code on the full alphabet and the digits 0 to 9 and inspecting the output. For each style we collected every non-ASCII character it can produce, looked each one up in the Unicode Character Database file DerivedAge.txt to find the version that first assigned it, and took the newest version as the style's requirement. Block names come from the Unicode block ranges. "Characters per letter" is the difference in length when one more letter is added, counted in Unicode characters (code points) and not in bytes.

Styles that add random combining marks, such as the glitch and zalgo styles, produce a different number of characters each time, so they are marked as varying.

Not every page shows every style. The platform and style pages use the full set of 89, filtered to what suits each page. The homepage shows a selection of 53, the Font Generator shows 48, and the bold, italic and cursive pages show only their own few.

What the table cannot tell you

The Unicode version tells you when a character was added to the standard, not whether a particular phone, app or font draws it. A newer device with a missing font can still show a box, and an older style can be drawn badly by a small font. The table is a guide to risk, not a guarantee. We have not run a device-by-device test, and platform behaviour changes with software updates. If you see a style behave differently, email hello@copyfont.com and we will check it and update this page. The accessibility guide covers how screen readers treat these characters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which fancy text styles are the safest to use?

The ones built from the oldest Unicode versions, which are listed first in the table. In practice that means the bold, italic, script, Fraktur and double-struck styles from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block (Unicode 3.1, 2001), plus fullwidth and plain-text styles.

Which styles are most likely to show empty boxes?

The ones that need the newest characters, which are listed last in the table. Regional indicator letters, for example, need Unicode 6.0 from 2010. Empty boxes also depend on the device's fonts, so treat the version as a risk guide.

Why do some styles leave numbers unchanged?

Unicode has matching digit characters for some styles only, for example bold, double-struck, monospace and fullwidth. For the rest there is no matching digit, so numbers stay plain.

Why does glitch text use so many characters?

Glitch and zalgo text add combining marks on top of each letter, and every mark counts as a character toward an app's limit. The number is random each time, so check the counter in the app before saving.
