A good gaming username does two jobs at once: it has to be available (good luck getting anything under 8 characters on a platform with 400 million accounts) and it has to say something about how you play without trying too hard. The lists below are grouped by vibe rather than by game, since the same "edgy" or "chaotic" energy translates across Fortnite, Valorant, Roblox or whatever you're playing next. Character limits differ by platform though, so check the limits section before you fall in love with a 20-character masterpiece that won't fit anywhere.
Character limits by platform
Fortnite display names allow up to 16 characters and support a good range of Unicode, so styled fonts generally work there. Roblox usernames are restricted to letters, numbers and underscores only, no Unicode styling, but Roblox display names (a separate, newer field) do support Unicode and have a 20-character cap. Valorant's Riot ID game name runs 3-16 characters with a separate 3-5 character tagline after the #. Discord display names go up to 32 characters and support full Unicode. When in doubt, test your exact name in the platform's actual signup or edit screen, these limits occasionally shift with platform updates.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the character limit for Fortnite usernames?
Fortnite display names allow up to 16 characters and support a solid range of Unicode, so styled fonts from a tool like CopyFont's generator generally display correctly there, unlike platforms that restrict names to plain ASCII.
Can I use fancy fonts in my Roblox username?
Not in your Roblox username itself, that field is restricted to letters, numbers and underscores. Roblox display names, a separate field added more recently, do support Unicode styling and allow up to 20 characters.
How long can a Valorant Riot ID be?
A Valorant Riot ID has two parts: a game name of 3-16 characters and a tagline of 3-5 characters after the # symbol. The game name is what teammates see in-match, the tagline helps distinguish you from others with the same name.
Why do some gaming usernames show as boxes on certain devices?
That means the device's font doesn't include a drawn glyph for that specific Unicode character, usually on an older phone or outdated game client. The username itself is valid and saved correctly, it's purely a display limitation on that one device.
Should I use the same username on every gaming platform?
It helps with recognition if friends are trying to find you across platforms, but character limits vary enough (Valorant's 16, Roblox username's plain-text-only restriction) that you may need slight variations. Keeping the core name consistent and adjusting only what each platform requires is usually the best balance.
