Strikethrough Text Generator
Crossed Out Text Copy Paste
Generate Unicode strikethrough, double underline, and overline text that copies and pastes anywhere. Works on Instagram, Discord, Twitter — no markup required.
Platform tip: Discord supports ~~tilde~~ strikethrough in messages, but it does not work in display names or bios. Unicode combining characters from CopyFont work everywhere — including Discord names, Instagram bios, and Twitter profiles.
CopyFont's strikethrough text generator is a free online tool that creates crossed out, double underlined, and overlined text for writers, editors, and social media users on Instagram, Discord, Twitter, Facebook, and any platform that supports plain text input.
How Unicode Strikethrough Works
Standard HTML strikethrough uses the <s> or <del> tag — markup that only renders inside a web browser. Discord's markdown strikethrough uses double tildes (~~like this~~), which only works in Discord message fields. Neither method works in Instagram bios, Twitter posts, or Discord display names. Unicode strikethrough uses a completely different mechanism: the combining character.
A Unicode combining character is a zero-width modifier that attaches to the preceding letter and alters how it is drawn. The strikethrough combining character U+0336 (Combining Long Stroke Overlay) is placed after each letter in a word. When rendered, it draws a horizontal line through that letter. Because combining characters are embedded in the text data itself — not in a style command — the crossed out effect travels with the text everywhere you paste it.
Combining Style Comparison
All three styles on this page use Unicode combining characters. Each creates a different visual effect suited to different contexts:
| Style | Preview | Combining character | Common use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strikethrough | T̶e̶x̶t̶ | U+0336 Long Stroke Overlay | Sarcasm, corrections, edits |
| Double Underline | T̳e̳x̳t̳ | U+0333 Double Low Line | Stylistic bios, emphasis |
| Overline | T̅e̅x̅t̅ | U+0305 Combining Overline | Math notation, aesthetic style |
Where to Use Strikethrough Text
Strikethrough is one of the most versatile text effects on social media. On Instagram, it is used in bios to show a previous status or name with a playful crossed-out effect — for example, showing an old job title s̶t̶r̶u̶c̶k̶ ̶t̶h̶r̶o̶u̶g̶h̶ next to a new one. On Twitter / X, it is used in tweets for sarcasm, corrections, and comedic emphasis. On Discord, Unicode strikethrough works in display names and About Me sections where the native ~~ markdown does not apply.
For decorative line effects, Double Underline is popular in aesthetic Instagram and TikTok bios where a bold visual flourish is the goal. Overline is less common on social media but appears in mathematics-inspired aesthetics and Gen Z text styling.
